What is normal, what to avoid and when to restart your skincare after microneedling. A clear day-by-day recovery guide from our Aldershot clinic.
Microneedling uses fine needles to create tiny channels in the skin, which prompts the skin to repair itself. That is the purpose of the treatment, and it is also why aftercare matters. For a few days your skin barrier is temporarily more open, so how you look after it affects how comfortably it heals. This guide walks you through each stage of microneedling recovery: what is normal, what to do and what to avoid.
One point first. Your practitioner's written instructions always come first. If anything below differs from the advice we give you, follow ours, because we tailor aftercare to your skin and to any add-on such as PRP or exosomes.
Microneedling Recovery at a Glance
- Day 0 (treatment day): red, warm and tight, similar to mild sunburn.
- Days 1–2: redness usually peaks, then starts to settle. Skin feels dry or tight.
- Days 3–5: light flaking or rough texture may appear.
- Days 5–7: skin looks and feels calmer. Most people return to normal routines.
- Weeks 2–6: collagen continues to remodel, so results build gradually.
Everyone heals at a different pace. Deeper settings, sensitive skin and add-ons can lengthen each stage slightly.
Day 0: Treatment Day
Expect pinkness or redness, warmth and a tight feeling. Mild swelling is also common. This is a normal response, not a sign that something went wrong.
- Use only what we give you. Apply the soothing gel or serum we recommend and nothing else.
- Keep your hands off your face. Touching transfers bacteria to skin that is healing.
- Skip makeup. Leave the skin bare for at least 24 hours.
- Change your pillowcase. Sleep on a clean one tonight.
Days 1–2: Peak Redness and Sensitivity
Redness often peaks around day two and then begins to fade. Skin may feel dry, tight or slightly rough.
- Cleanse gently. Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water. Pat dry. Never rub.
- Moisturise simply. Choose a plain, hydrating moisturiser. Hyaluronic acid or barrier-repair formulas work well.
- Wear SPF every day. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, even on cloudy days. Mineral sunscreens are usually better tolerated on fresh skin.
- Avoid heat and sweat. Skip the gym, saunas, steam rooms, hot baths and swimming pools for the first 48–72 hours.
- Go easy on alcohol. It can increase dryness and puffiness.
Days 3–5: Flaking and Peeling
Light flaking is common as the surface skin renews. It usually looks like fine dryness rather than sheets of skin.
- Let it shed naturally. Do not pick, scrub or peel. Picking can lead to marks and uneven pigmentation.
- Keep moisturising. Hydration reduces flaking and tightness.
- Stay out of strong sun. Avoid sunbeds and sunbathing for around two weeks, and keep wearing SPF.
- Hold off on actives. Do not use retinoids, vitamin C, AHAs or BHAs yet.
Days 5–7: Reintroducing Your Routine
By now, most redness and flaking should have settled. If your skin feels calm and comfortable, you can start to return to normal.
- Makeup: light makeup is usually fine. Use clean brushes and sponges.
- Exercise: return to light activity first, then your usual routine as comfort allows.
- Active skincare: reintroduce one product at a time, spaced a few days apart. If stinging or redness returns, stop and go back to basics.
If your skin still feels raw or very red at day seven, keep to the gentle routine and ask us for advice.
What Happens After the First Week?
The visible healing is over quickly, but the skin keeps working underneath. Collagen remodelling continues over the following weeks, so improvements in texture and tone build gradually rather than overnight. Treatments are usually spaced several weeks apart, and we will advise on a plan that suits your skin and goals. If you are considering microneedling for scarring, our guide to acne scar treatments explains what to expect.
When to Contact the Clinic
Some redness, tightness and flaking are expected. Get in touch if you notice any of the following:
- Pain or swelling that is getting worse rather than better after the first two days
- Pus, crusting that spreads, or a fever
- Redness that spreads or is not improving after a week
- Blisters or an unusual rash
If you feel unwell or are worried out of hours, contact NHS 111 or your GP.
Microneedling Aftercare FAQs
Q. How long does redness last after microneedling?
Ans. Most people see redness settle within about 48 hours, though it can last a little longer after deeper treatments or on sensitive skin.
Q. Is it normal for skin to peel after microneedling?
Ans. Yes. Light flaking around days 3–5 is common. Let it shed on its own and keep the skin moisturised. Do not pick at it.
Q. Can I wear makeup after microneedling?
Ans. Avoid makeup for at least 24 hours, and longer if your skin is still very red or sore. When you restart, use clean brushes and sponges.
Q. When can I use retinol or vitamin C again?
Ans. Most people wait until around days 5–7, once the skin feels calm. Reintroduce one product at a time and stop if irritation returns. Follow your practitioner's advice for your case.
Q. Can microneedling cause breakouts?
Ans. Some people get a few spots in the days after treatment as the skin adjusts. Keep your routine simple, avoid squeezing and tell us if breakouts persist.
Q. When can I exercise after microneedling?
Ans. Avoid heavy exercise and sweating for around 48 hours. Return to light activity first, then build back up as your skin allows.
