Four pigmentation treatments, four very different results. Here's our honest breakdown of carbon laser, chemical peels, pico laser and Cosmelan peel — what each actually treats — for clients across Hampshire and Surrey. Book your consultation today.
Most people don't walk into a pigmentation consultation on day one. They've usually spent months, sometimes years, working through vitamin C, niacinamide, azelaic acid and a rotating cast of serums first — and for a lot of mild pigmentation, that's genuinely the right place to start. But when a good topical routine has been given a fair run and the dark patches are still there, the next question is which in-clinic treatment actually fits your skin. Carbon laser, chemical peel, pico laser and Cosmelan peel all treat pigmentation, but they're not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one can mean paying for a treatment that was never going to touch your specific concern.
Why Skincare Alone Sometimes Isn't Enough
A solid topical routine can make a real difference to pigmentation, but it takes time — often six months to a year of consistent use before you see the full result, and that's assuming the pigmentation is superficial enough for topicals to reach. Melasma in particular tends to be more stubborn, since it sits deeper in the skin and is easily triggered by inflammation, hormones and sun exposure. This is usually the point where an in-clinic treatment gets discussed, and it's worth knowing what each one is actually built for before you book.
Carbon Laser
Carbon laser works by applying a thin layer of carbon to the skin, which the laser then targets — deep-cleansing pores, controlling oil, and gently brightening the surface in the process. It's a good fit for dull, congested skin with mild, surface-level unevenness, but it's not built to shift deeper or more stubborn pigmentation like melasma or post-inflammatory marks. Think of it as a refining treatment rather than a pigmentation-specific one.
Chemical Peel
A chemical peel works by exfoliating away damaged, pigmented skin cells and encouraging fresh cell turnover underneath. It's genuinely effective for mild to moderate pigmentation, sun damage and general unevenness, though it usually needs a course of sessions rather than a single visit, and downtime varies depending on the depth of the peel used.
Pico Laser
Pico laser uses picosecond pulses to shatter pigment particles mechanically, with far less heat than older lasers — which means less risk of triggering new pigmentation as a side effect. It's particularly effective for stubborn pigmentation, sun spots, freckles and post-acne marks. Melasma needs a more cautious, low-energy approach with this treatment specifically, since it can rebound if treated too aggressively — something we're always upfront about at consultation.
Cosmelan Peel
Cosmelan is a more intensive, medical-grade depigmentation protocol, generally considered one of the strongest options for melasma and deeply resistant dark spots. It combines an in-clinic peel with a structured homecare plan, and tends to suit people who've already tried gentler options without the results they wanted.
Which Treatment Is Right for You?
As a rough guide: dull, congested skin with mild unevenness tends to suit carbon laser. General sun damage and uneven tone across a larger area often responds well to a chemical peel. Stubborn, well-defined pigmentation like sun spots, freckles or post-acne marks is usually a good fit for pico laser. And melasma or pigmentation that hasn't responded to anything else is where Cosmelan tends to come into the conversation. None of this replaces a proper skin assessment, but it's a starting point for the conversation.
What Each Treatment Costs
All four sit within our Advanced Pigmentation & Brightening treatment, which starts from £150 depending on protocol: carbon laser from £149, chemical peel from £249, pico laser from £349, and Cosmelan peel from £1,111. Every plan starts with a consultation with a Level 7 Qualified Aesthetic Nurse, who'll recommend the treatment (or combination) that actually fits your pigmentation, not the one that's easiest to sell. You can see the full breakdown on our Advanced Pigmentation & Brightening service page.
