"How many sessions will I need?" is the first question almost everyone asks about laser hair removal. The honest answer is: it depends. Here's what actually determines your result.
Laser hair removal is one of those treatments where the marketing often says one thing and the clinical reality says another. You'll see clinics advertising packages of 6 sessions as though that's a universal number that applies to everyone equally. It doesn't.
The honest answer to "how many sessions will I need?" is: it depends on several factors that are specific to you. Here's what actually influences your results.
Why Multiple Sessions Are Necessary
Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicle with light energy. That light energy converts to heat and damages the follicle's ability to regrow hair. The catch is that this process only works effectively during the active growth phase of the hair cycle — called anagen.
At any given time, only a proportion of your hair follicles are in the anagen phase. The rest are in transition or resting phases, where laser treatment has minimal effect. This is why multiple sessions, spaced appropriately apart, are necessary. Each session targets a new batch of follicles that have entered the active phase since your last treatment.
What Affects How Many Sessions You'll Need?
Several factors determine how quickly you'll see results and how many sessions you'll ultimately require:
Hair colour and thickness. Darker, coarser hair responds best to laser treatment because it contains more melanin for the laser to target. Fine, light hair requires more sessions and may not achieve complete removal. Very fair or white hair contains very little melanin and responds poorly to laser, regardless of how many sessions you have. This is something we'll always be upfront about at consultation.
Skin tone. Modern laser technology has significantly improved the safety and effectiveness of treatment across a wider range of skin tones. At Suhmina Aesthetic Clinic, we use medical-grade equipment appropriate for diverse skin tones, and we assess each patient individually to determine the safest and most effective settings.
Treatment area. Different body areas have different hair growth cycles. The face typically cycles faster than the legs or bikini area. This affects both the spacing between sessions and the total number required.
Hormonal factors. Conditions like PCOS can cause hair regrowth even after effective treatment, as hormonal stimulation continues to activate follicles. Patients with hormonal hair growth often need maintenance sessions beyond the initial course.
So What's the Realistic Number?
For most patients, a course of 6 to 8 sessions achieves significant, lasting reduction — typically 70 to 90% reduction in hair growth in the treated area. Some patients see excellent results in fewer sessions; others with coarser hair or hormonal influences may need more.
We won't promise you a specific number at your first appointment, because doing so without knowing your individual response would be misleading. What we will do is give you an honest assessment at consultation. We'll track your progress through your sessions and advise you on what to realistically expect for your specific skin and hair type.
