Anti-wrinkle injections are one of the most searched-for aesthetic treatments in the UK — and also one of the most misunderstood. Here's what we see in clinic every day.
Anti-wrinkle injections have been around for decades. They're the most commonly performed aesthetic treatment in the UK, and yet the questions we hear in clinic suggest there's still a lot of confusion about what they actually do, how they work, and what a good result looks like.
So let's talk about it properly — without the glossy marketing language.
What Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections, Actually?
The treatment uses a prescription-only medicine that temporarily relaxes specific facial muscles. When those muscles are relaxed, the overlying skin stops being creased by repetitive movement — so lines that appear when you frown, squint, or raise your eyebrows become less visible, or disappear entirely.
The key word there is "prescription-only." In the UK, this treatment can only be legally administered under a prescription from a qualified prescriber. At Suhmina Aesthetic Clinic, all injectable treatments are carried out under appropriate medical oversight, by Level 7 qualified nurses with the clinical training to assess, prescribe, and treat safely.
This matters more than most people realise. The rise of unlicensed practitioners offering cheap injections is a genuine patient safety concern, and it's something we feel strongly about.
What Areas Can Be Treated?
The most commonly treated areas are the forehead, the frown lines between the eyebrows (sometimes called the "11s"), and the crow's feet around the eyes. These are the areas where repetitive muscle movement over years creates the most visible lines.
But that's not the full picture. Depending on your anatomy and what you're hoping to achieve, anti-wrinkle injections can also be used to lift the brow, soften a gummy smile, reduce a dimpled chin, slim the jaw (by relaxing the masseter muscle), and even reduce excessive sweating in the underarms or palms.
Each person's face is different. What works brilliantly for one patient may not be appropriate for another. This is why we assess every patient individually rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
Does It Hurt?
Honestly? Most patients describe it as a mild scratch or slight sting — very brief, and much less uncomfortable than they expected. The needles used are extremely fine, and the treatment is quick. Most appointments take no longer than 20 to 30 minutes including the consultation element.
Some areas are slightly more sensitive than others. The frown area between the brows tends to be the most tolerable; around the eyes can feel a touch sharper. But in our experience, the anticipation is almost always worse than the reality.
How Long Does It Last?
Results typically last between 3 and 4 months, though this varies depending on the individual — factors like muscle strength, metabolism, and how much sun exposure you've had over the years all play a role. Some patients find their results last longer after several treatments, as the muscles gradually adapt.
We always recommend a review appointment at around 2 weeks to assess the result and make any small adjustments if needed. This is part of every treatment at our clinic — not an additional cost.
What Does a Natural Result Look Like?
This is the question we care most about. A well-executed anti-wrinkle treatment should leave you looking like yourself — just more rested, more refreshed, with less tension in your expression. Nobody should be able to tell you've had anything done unless you tell them.
The "frozen" look that people worry about comes from too much product, placed in the wrong areas, by someone without the anatomical knowledge to understand how facial muscles interact. With the right clinical eye and conservative dosing, this is entirely avoidable.
