Fat dissolving injections are one of the most searched non-surgical body treatments in the UK. They also have more misinformation around them than almost any other aesthetic treatment. Let's be honest about what they do and don't do.
Fat dissolving injections — sometimes called lipolytic injections or referred to by brand names like Aqualyx — have become one of the most requested non-surgical body treatments we see. They've also accumulated a significant amount of misinformation along the way. Some of that comes from over-enthusiastic marketing, and some from patients comparing results achieved in very different circumstances.
So here's a straightforward, honest account of what fat dissolving injections actually involve — from someone who performs them regularly.
How They Work
Fat dissolving injections use a synthetic compound — most commonly deoxycholic acid or phosphatidylcholine-based solutions. It disrupts and breaks down the membrane of fat cells in the treated area. Once the fat cell membrane is compromised, the contents are gradually metabolised and eliminated by the body's lymphatic system over the weeks following treatment.
The process is not instantaneous. The breakdown and elimination of disrupted fat cells takes time — typically 4 to 8 weeks. That's why results aren't visible immediately after treatment, and why patience between sessions is necessary.
What Areas Can Be Treated?
Fat dissolving injections work well for small, localised deposits of stubborn fat. These are areas where diet and exercise haven't produced the results you're looking for, despite genuine effort. The most commonly treated areas are the double chin (submental fat), jowls, bra strap area, inner thighs, and small pockets of fat around the abdomen.
The key word is "localised." These injections are not a weight loss treatment. They are not appropriate for larger areas of generalised fat, and they will not produce the kind of results that surgical liposuction achieves. Patients who come in expecting dramatic body transformation will be disappointed. Patients who come in with a specific, contained area of stubborn fat and realistic expectations tend to be very pleased.
What Does the Treatment Feel Like?
Honestly — it's uncomfortable during the procedure. The injections themselves cause a stinging sensation, and the area typically becomes swollen, tender, and bruised for several days afterwards. The swelling can be significant, particularly when treating the double chin. Patients should be prepared for this, and shouldn't be alarmed when the treated area initially looks larger before it looks smaller.
This is something we always discuss clearly at consultation. It would be doing you a disservice to describe this as a quick, painless lunchtime treatment. The reality involves a recovery period of several days where the treated area may be noticeably swollen.
How Many Sessions Are Needed?
Most patients require 2 to 4 sessions, spaced at least 6 to 8 weeks apart. This gives disrupted fat cells time to fully clear before we assess results and plan further treatment. Some patients achieve their desired outcome in 2 sessions; others with more significant fat deposits may need more.
We always assess the area at each session before proceeding — there's no value in treating an area that hasn't yet shown its full response to previous treatment.
Is It Right for You?
The best candidates are patients who are at or near a healthy weight and have a specific localised area of fat that hasn't responded to lifestyle changes. They also come in with realistic expectations about the degree of improvement possible. If you're significantly above a healthy weight, we would always discuss lifestyle factors alongside any aesthetic treatment. This isn't to be prescriptive — it's because results are significantly better maintained in patients who are weight stable.
